ADULT LEARNERS WEEK: Kat Sowerby

For Kathleen Sowerby graduation is only weeks away. She studied BA (Hons) degree in Illustration for Commercial Application and was also honored with the Illustration Award for her year at the Northern Exposure Degree show in June. Kat joined us as a mature student on the Access to HE course after battling with agoraphobia and looking for a way to get back on her feet, practice an almost forgotten passion in the form of illustration and gain her confidence back. We caught up with Kat for the Festival of Learning (previously Adult Learners Week) to chat about her experience here at CCAD and her advice to anyone looking to get back into education.

As this week is Adult Learners week, we caught up with some of our students who came back into education to re-ignite their creative passions and follow their career dreams. Our Access to HE course, which is taught at our Green Lane campus, is designed to give opportunities for those returning to education or mature students, to achieve a higher education qualification. On the course, a huge variety of subjects are covered which lets the students delve into any creative platform they choose.

The annual summer show at Cleveland College of Art and Design (CCAD) in Middlesbrough has once again celebrated the future generation of artists and designers with students now going to employment and prestigious higher education institutions.

Putting their talents in the spotlight, over 300 students showcased their works from a wide range of courses at the ‘Make your Mark’ exhibition at the leading specialist art and design college, including fashion, photography, 3D design, fine art and design crafts.Read more

Alumni Student Showcased at Saatchi Gallery

Danny Lowe is an industry known, respected photographer who studied with us at Cleveland College of Art and Design. Now London based, Danny is certainly making waves in the photography world as his series called ‘Brothers’ recently featured in the Saatchi Gallery, in association with The World Wide Tribe. The exhibition showcased Lowe’s individual portraits of refugees he met during a stay in the notorious ‘Jungle’ camp in Calais, Northern France.

Photography students from Cleveland College of Art and Design (CCAD) have been inspired by a generation spanning 76 years to create a marketing campaign which helps reduce loneliness and social isolation in Middlesbrough.

Ageing Better Middlesbrough (ABM), led by Middlesbrough and Stockton Mind, set the students a live brief as part of their second year BTEC Extended Diploma in Photography course.Read more
